Peters Wins Javelin Bronze at 2018 Commonwealth Games
April 14, 2018 | Track & Field
QUEENSLAND, Australia – Add another international medal to Mississippi State track and field's collection.
Freshman Anderson Peters won bronze in the javelin at the 2018 Commonwealth Games overnight with a season-best throw of 82.20m (271-8). The NCAA-leader remained fourth in the world and improved on his second-best throw in MSU history.
"This is a great accomplishment for Anderson," throws coach April Thomas said. "He's worked hard and that's made my job easy. We love to see athletes who want to get better on their own. He's earned this and we are so happy for him."
Peters now owns 13 international medals. He claimed his first as the gold medalist at the 2012 CARIFTA Games in Bermuda. The Grenadian national holds his country's record with a throw of 84.81m (278-3) at last year's OECS Championships.
His third-place finish on Friday night gives Grenada its fifth Commonwealth Games medal and its first in the javelin.
The Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Queensland, Australia, bring 71 commonwealth nations and more than 6,600 athletes together to compete in 18 sports and seven para-sports. The first Games were held in 1930 as the "British Empire Games," and they have been held every four years since 1950.
MSU concludes competition at the Tennessee Relays on Saturday before heading to the Penn Relays on April 26-28.
