April 12, 2018 | Track & Field
QUEENSLAND, Australia – Bulldogs are once again on the international stage as Mississippi State freshman Anderson Peters prepares to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Thursday night.
Peters will throw the javelin for his home nation of Grenada, where he holds the national record at 84.81m (278-3), at 7 p.m. CT. He is a five-time CARIFTA Games champion in the event and leads the NCAA this season with a mark of 81.95m (268-10).
His personal best is third among the entered competitors, trailing only Julius Yego on Kenya (92.72m, 304-2) and Neeraj Chopra of India (86.48m, 283-8).
"This a great opportunity for Anderson," throws coach April Thomas said. "He has a great chance of medaling and the opportunity to represent both his country and Mississippi State. I am very excited and happy for him."
The Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Queensland, Australia, bring 71 commonwealth nations and more than 6,600 athletes together to compete in 18 sports and seven para-sports. The first Games were held in 1930 as the "British Empire Games," and they have been held every four years since 1950.
Should Peters advance to the finals, he would throw again Friday night at 11:30 p.m. The rest of the Bulldogs will be competing at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., through Saturday.
