No. 27 Bulldogs Dominate Auburn To Open SEC Play On Sunday
March 04, 2018 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Southeastern Conference play could not have started much better for the No. 27 Mississippi State men's tennis team (7-1, 1-0 SEC) on Sunday, as the Bulldogs took down Auburn (9-6, 0-1), 6-1, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
MSU relied on solid doubles play and dominant singles to tame the Tigers in the league opener for both squads.
"I thought we did a good job in doubles today, bouncing back after being down on a couple of courts," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "The guys did a solid job of communicating well and making a push. I think we still could have come out with more energy in doubles."
State's 51st-ranked tandem of Florian Broska and Trevor Foshey got the Bulldogs off to a quick start in doubles, taking a 6-2 victory on court 3 against Auburn's Diego Chavarria and Carles Sarrio. The win moved the pair to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in dual match play this season.
Courts 1 and 2 both featured thrillers. On court 1, MSU's Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic rallied from down 4-1 to win the final five games against AU's Matteo De Vincentis and Edward Nguyen to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs and put MSU up 1-0. At the No. 2 spot, Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini faced off against Tad Maclean and Olle Thestrup in a match that was suspended with Braun and Oradini leading 6-5 (also having trailed 4-1).
"Give Auburn credit, they came out with a lot of energy and we felt it initially," Roberts added. "Those guys played sharp and it took us some time to get back into it, but once we got in a groove, we played really well in doubles."
MSU's fourth-ranked Borges wasted no time in dispatching his singles opponent on court 1, downing Auburn's 123rd-ranked Edward Nguyen in 6-1, 6-1 fashion. Borges' win moved him to 14-1 overall in 2017-18, 7-0 in dual match action.
On court 3, the 70th-ranked Rakic put the Bulldogs up 3-0 with a solid 6-2, 6-4 win in which he fended off a fierce rally attempt by Thestrup. Moments later, Braun clinched the match for the Maroon and White with a gutsy 6-2, 7-5 victory against Sarrio.
Like the Bulldogs, the rookie Broska got his career in SEC matches off to a great start, earning a 7-5, 6-4 victory against AU's Maclean on court 5 in his first league match.
"In singles, I felt like everything from top-to-bottom was solid," Roberts said. "I'm very happy with Florian Broska. He did a great job and it was awesome to see him play really tough on the big points."
MSU's Foshey once again earned a win in a close match, this time taking a 6-4, 6-7(5), 1-0(7) triumph against AU's Lorenzo Rodriguez at No. 6 and MSU led 6-0.
Auburn's lone point came when De Vincentis notched a very tight 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(9) victory against fellow Italian – MSU's 20th-ranked Oradini - on court 2.
With the win against the Tigers, State improved to 29-21 in the series since 1973 and 15-9 at home. Additionally, State has now won the last five meetings against AU and has not lost at home in the series since 2006. Under Roberts, the Bulldogs are now 15-5 in home SEC matches and have won their last four league matches at Pitts.
Next Up For MSU…
State will continue its homestand to open league action with a pair of big matches next weekend. First, the Bulldogs will host No. 18 Florida at 3 p.m. Friday followed by a battle against 29th-ranked South Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both UF and USC upended defending SEC Champion and 17th-ranked Georgia this weekend in home matches. Admission to all regular-season home matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre is free.
