Bulldog Track Falters on First Day in Clemson, Nashville
February 09, 2018 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C./NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Facing its toughest competition of the year, Mississippi State opened the Tiger Paw Invitation at Clemson with Ro'Derick Spears turning in the top performance of the day for the Bulldogs.
The first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational marks the first time in the 2018 season, the Bulldogs have failed to record multiple Top 10 finishes on a single day of a meet. Only Spears cracked the Top 10, finishing seventh in the 60m hurdles (8.01).
"I'm very disappointed in how we ran today," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "I didn't see the effort that has turned this program around in the past decade out of our team tonight."
The women were led by Tiffany Flynn, who finished 16th in the 60m hurdles, and Keturah Smith, who placed 14th in the 400m. Meanwhile, freshman Riley Smith set a new personal-best in the 400m, finishing in 57.51.
The Bulldogs fared better at the Music City Challenge. Shayla Broughton took seventh in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.66m (5-5.25). She was followed by Brianna Smith who claimed fifth in the women's weight throw, tossing the weight 20.17m (66-2.25).
Shannon Fair's 16:33.32 in the women's 5000m was good for ninth place and the Bulldogs' third Top 10 finish in Nashville.
