STARKVILLE, Miss. – There's no place like home.
The 14th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (5-1) continued its non-conference dominance at home on Friday, taking a 6-1 victory against San Diego State (0-5) at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"I was really impressed with how clean we played today," fourth-year coach Matt Roberts said. "We have been doing a lot of doubles drills. We're volleying better. We're moving at the net better. Our returning is getting better. So, it was just a really positive day for doubles to see how clean we were on all three courts."
State mixed up the doubles lineup for the first time in 2018, and it led to the Bulldogs getting off to a very strong start. MSU got a quick advantage with a 6-2 victory by Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini on court 2 against SDSU's Santiago Cervallos and Arnaud Restifo. Shortly thereafter on court 3, Florian Broska and Trevor Foshey put State up 1-0 by breezing past Aztecs Rafael Gonzalez Almazan and David Hough, posting a 6-1 win to clinch the doubles point. It was also the first time both Bulldog pairs had teamed up since Sept. 23.
Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic started on court 1 for the first time as a tandem, but their match was suspended after the clincher with Borges and Rakic up 5-4.
The Maroon and White picked up right where it left off in singles action, with the second-ranked Borges quickly dispatching Cervallos 6-0, 6-1 on court 1 to put MSU up 2-0. With the win, Borges extended his singles winning streak to 12. Borges' victory gave him 100 total wins in his MSU career (doubles and singles combined).
No. 60 Rakic put State up 3-0 with a business-like 6-3, 6-2 victory on court 3 against Sander Gjoels-Andersen. Moments later, the 13th-ranked Bulldog Oradini clinched it for State by finishing off a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Restifo on court 2.
On court 5, MSU's Foshey climbed back into the win column and put MSU up 5-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Gonzalez Almazan. About 20 minutes later, Broska made the score 6-0 by winning 6-1, 6-3 against SDSU's Joel Popov on court 4. Hunter Harrison rounded out singles play, dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision in his first dual match as a Bulldog.
With the win, State moved to 22-1 in home non-conference tilts under Roberts' leadership. In addition, the Bulldogs have now won their last 18 matches against non-SEC foes. MSU also moved to 2-0 all-time against SDSU.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will return to the court Sunday at noon to face its second California-based opponent in as many matches, hosting Pepperdine. Admission to the match and all regular-season home matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre is free.
