STARKVILLE, Miss. – Twenty-one ranked opponents await the Mississippi State track and field program this weekend as the Bulldogs split the squad for meets in Clemson, S.C. and Nashville, Tenn.
"We're splitting up this week to put our athletes in the best position to qualify for nationals and prepare for the SEC Championships in two weeks," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "Certain tracks are better for certain events, so we're going to go where we need to to get those faster times."
The larger portion of MSU's team will head to the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville. More than 750 athletes representing 27 schools will be in attendance including conference foes Alabama, Missouri, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
The men will meet ranked opponents in the No. 5 Crimson Tide along with No. 2 Texas Tech, No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 20 Michigan. MSU's women are ranked No. 20 and will face No. 10 Ole Miss, No. 13 Michigan, No. 14 Missouri and No. 17 Alabama.
A smaller contingent will head to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational where they will be joined by SEC members Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas A&M and South Carolina.
Florida's men are the top team in the nation, and Georgia is ranked No. 3 on the men's side while holding the No. 2 spot in the women's rankings. Every SEC team in attendance has at least one of their two teams ranked.
MSU's two SEC-leading athletes will both head to Clemson. Logan Boss, the national leader and indoor school record holder in her event, is entered in the high jump, while Marco Arop, the MSU 800m freshman record holder and top Canadian in the event this year, will run on the 4x400m relay.
