MSU Women’s Tennis Sweeps Thursday Road Doubleheader
February 08, 2018 | Women's Tennis
HAMMOND, La. – The Mississippi State women's tennis team (6-2) notched a pair of 4-0 shutout victories on the road Thursday evening, as the Bulldogs ousted Southeastern Louisiana on its home courts and followed with a neutral site triumph over Southern University.
"I am happy with the way our girls responded to the challenges we faced today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I think we performed well overall and we are all happy to get a couple more wins."
Match 1 - MSU 4, Southeastern Louisiana 0
State jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point against homestanding Southeastern Louisiana. On court 1, MSU's Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak made quick work of SLU's Dalina Dahlmans and Ximena Yanez, 6-1. Clinching the doubles point on court 3, State's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli overpowered Tigers Katya Cornejo and Dany Raygadas 6-2. The remaining match was suspended at 5-4 with MSU's Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun leading SLU's Jiva de Veer and Fleur Holtkamp at No. 2.
The Bulldogs continued their overpowering ways in singles. On court 3, MSU's Adaloglou overwhelmed SLU's de Veer 6-1, 6-2. Following close behind at No. 2, State's Harrison posted a straight-set victory against Southeastern Louisiana's Fleur Holtkamp 6-3, 6-0.
The clincher came on court 5 where MSU's Vozniak extended her winning streak to six in a row with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against SLU's Dalina Dahlmans. MSU held one-set leads in two of the three matches that were suspended upon the clinch.
Match 2 - MSU 4, Southern University 0
Due to the late start, doubles matches were not played in State's second contest Thursday. MSU picked up right where is left off, however, taking all six first sets in singles.
Not allowing her opponent a single game, MSU's Rentouli vanquished SU's Nicki Neal 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. Following on court 2, State's Harrison overpowered Jaguar Tanaka Chakanyuka 6-3, 6-2.
Extending the lead to 3-0, the Maroon & White's Adaloglou posted a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 victory against Southern's Stephanie Mbaya on court 3. Clinching her third match of the year, MSU's Braun then outlasted SU's Rufaro Chirewa, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.
In the two matches that were suspended, State's Caroline Kelly led 6-4, 3-3 over Southern's Mia Kent on court 6. At No. 5, State's Lizariturry was up a set on the Jaguars' D'Jeri Raymond at No. 5.
