Bulldog Track Advances Four, Breaks 16 Personal Bests at SEC Championships
February 24, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mississippi State's track and field program advanced four athletes to Sunday's finals at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday. Combined with those events that did not have preliminary rounds, the Bulldogs will compete in 13 events tomorrow.
While not all of them advanced, 14 athletes broke or matched 16 personal bests on the first day of competition. Terryon Conwell had his best day on the track in both of his events, finishing the 200m in 21.09 and the 60m dash in 6.77. Monica Mosley also set two new personal bests, completing the 60m in 8.37 and recording the fastest time of her career in the 400m. Her 54.48 in the 400m ranks fifth in school history.
"I'm a little disappointed in the number of athletes we advanced, but a lot of them ran better times than they had all season," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "You can't expect them to come in here, just because it's a big meet, and suddenly run times they never have before."
Tiffany Flynn was the first Bulldog to advance to tomorrow's finals, finishing eighth the 60m hurdles (8.24). She was followed by Rhianwedd Price-Weimer, who won the prelims in the mile with a time of 4:43.28.
On the men's side, two 800m runners advanced. Dejon Devroe, who entered the meet third in the SEC, and Daniel Nixon, who entered as the eighth-fastest competitor, moved on to tomorrow's final. Nixon's time of 1:49.21 was a personal best.
In the combined events, Tillman finished 13th in the pentathlon, while Shayla Broughton placed 10th. Willie-Lionel Reed sits in seventh place midway through the heptathlon. He placed fourth in the 60m, long jump and high jump, but dropped to eighth in the shot put.
The SEC Indoor Championships wrap up tomorrow, beginning with the conclusion of the heptathlon at 2:30 p.m. CT. Live coverage on SEC Network picks up at 5 p.m. with Bulldogs in the women's weight throw, high jump and triple jump.
MSU will run in the finals of the women's 60m hurdles at 5:06 p.m. and the women's mile and 5:29 p.m. The final event of the heptathlon, the 1000m, will break finals action at 6:36 p.m. and be immediately followed by the men's 800m. The event concludes with the distance medley and 4x400m relays beginning at 7:58 p.m.
