Trevor Foshey clinched a 4-3 victory for the Bulldogs to end a match that spanned nearly eight hours.
Bulldog Men's Tennis Wins Marathon Match At Tulane
February 24, 2018 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Multiple rain delays and a change of venue was not enough to keep the No. 39 Mississippi State men's tennis team (6-1) out of the win column on Friday, as the Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 4-3 road win at 30th-ranked Tulane (4-3) in a match that spanned a period of nearly eight hours.
The day began outdoors at City Park Pepsi Tennis Center at roughly 3:30 p.m., but off-and-on showers throughout the afternoon led to multiple delays and eventually forced the match indoors at Hilton RiverCentre, where it restarted at 8 p.m. and finally finished just before midnight.
"The boys got tougher today," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "They wanted this match so bad and you could see it in the way they competed all night. (Tulane head coach) Mark (Booras) and his team always compete so well at Tulane and we knew today was going to be tough. We got tougher and tougher as the day progressed. I'm proud of how our team competed. We pushed through all of the adversity and we can definitely build on this match moving forward into the SEC season."
MSU got off to a solid start in doubles, taking a quick advantage with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot by Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini against the Green Wave's 50th-ranked Luis Erlenbusch and Tyler Schick. The win marked the pair's first ranked win as a duo this season. Moments after Braun and Oradini's triumph, rain returned and action was postponed until later in the evening indoors.
Once the teams resumed play inside, doubles play was a nail-biter. At the No. 1 position, Bulldogs Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic rallied from down 5-2 to make it 5-4 before dropping a tight 6-4 decision to Ewan Moore and Constantin Schmitz.
Court 3 featured a thriller to decide who was taking home the doubles point. In a back-and-forth affair that needed a tie-breaker to settle it, MSU's 51st-ranked duo of Florian Broska and Trevor Foshey had the last word, claiming a 7-6(8) victory over Tim Ruetzel and Hamish Stewart to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 early.
MSU's fourth-ranked Borges kicked off singles action with a bang, dispatching TU's No. 24 Schmitz 6-0, 6-3 on court 1 to put State up 2-0. The win was Borges' fifth-consecutive against Schmitz in as many meetings. He also extended his win streak to 12 matches dating back to early October.
Tulane got on the board soon after with Stewart taking a 6-1, 7-5 decision against the 70th-ranked Rakic at the No. 3 spot. Moments later, the Green Wave knotted things up at 2-2 with Ewan Moore winning a tight 6-4, 6-4 match against No. 20 Oradini. That left three close matches on the court to decide the outcome.
State broke the 2-all tie after Braun picked up a tough 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win in a hard-fought contest against fellow German Erlenbusch at the No. 4 position. Just under 20 minutes later, the Green Wave tied it up at 3-all with a win at the No. 5 position by No. 95 Schick against MSU's Broska by a 6-2, 7-6(6) mark.
Court six was an absolute battle between Foshey and Ruetzel, who faced off earlier in the close contest that decided the doubles point. After Foshey took the first set 6-4, the two fought tooth-and-nail until the very end, with Foshey forcing a tiebreaker to decide the second set. After tying up the tiebreaker at 3-all, Foshey went on to win the tiebreaker, set and match 6-4, 7-6(6) to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 win.
With the victory, State improved to 13-6 against Tulane since 1969, and has won five straight in the series (and nine of the last 11). Under Roberts, the Bulldogs are now 36-26 against ranked foes.
Next Up For MSU…
State will return to the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre for a three-match home stand to open SEC play, beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, against Auburn. Admission to the match and all regular-season home matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre is free.
