Bulldogs Dominate Rebels From Start To Finish

STARKVILLE, Miss. — There was no question who was the better team on this night.
In front of a season-best crowd of 9,001 at Humphrey Coliseum, Mississippi State jumped out to a 5-0 lead early and never looked back en route to a 79-62 win against Ole Miss to earn the season split.
Quinndary Weatherspoon was impressive inside and out, scoring a team-high 16 points while collecting 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. He was one of four players in double-digits for the Bulldogs, along with Tyson Carter (15), Nick Weatherspoon (15) and Xavian Stapleton (10).
With the win, MSU improved to 19-8 overall and evened its record in SEC play at 7-7. The Bulldogs also set a Humphrey Coliseum record with 17 victories.
"They brought the intensity and focus, and it really showed tonight from the get-go," said MSU coach Ben Howland, who collected his 450th win. "I was happy about the defense in the first half, which caused them to shoot 27 percent. We really exerted our toughness and quickness in how we defended them."
The closest the Rebels (4-10, 11-16) got was 8-6 early on. From that point, though, MSU orchestrated a 10-0 run to push the lead to 18-6 on a 3-pointer by Stapleton.
Ole Miss would cut the lead to 21-15 on a basket by Bruce Stevens but another 10-run, capped by a Quinndary Weatherspoon free throw, kept the advantage in double-digits the remainder of the game.
At the break, MSU lead 44-23 thanks to a tip-in at the buzzer by KeyShawn Feazell.
In the second frame, the Bulldogs built as much as 22-point advantage on a 3-pointer by Carter. Ole Miss cut it to 13, but would get no closer as MSU snapped its four-game losing skid to Ole Miss.
Mississippi State shot 56.4 percent from the field, with a 52.2 percent accuracy beyond the arc. Ole Miss was 23-56, 7-23 from long range. Breein Tyree paced the Rebels with 15 points, while Deandre Burnett added 13.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday at Texas A&M. Tip is set for 6 p.m. on the SEC Network.
