STARKVILLE, Miss. – As 2019 closes in, Mississippi State women's tennis looks to build on last season's record-breaking achievements as tenth-year head coach Daryl Greenan and the rest of the State squad anticipate the arrival of the spring slate in Bulldog country.
"We are all excited for the upcoming spring season. The girls are looking forward to competing in front of our awesome fans at the Pitts Tennis Centre," said Greenan. "There truly isn't a better place in the country to watch a live college match. Our schedule will provide us with plenty of big opportunities, and the girls are anticipating the challenges."
In 2018, MSU reached new heights, as the squad earned its program-record fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the ninth overall. Last year's team notched a program record five-straight SEC matches midway through the campaign, including a memorable 4-3 decision over second-ranked Vanderbilt at home, making it the highest-ranked victory ever. Vanderbilt went on to play in the 2018 National Championship match.
MSU returns four letterwinners from 2018's historic squad, with the addition of four notable newcomers to the scene in 2019.
The Bulldogs' 2019 stretch includes 12 contests against 2018 NCAA Tournament squads, including North Carolina State and Alabama State in non-conference action. State's league slate features 10 NCAA Tournament teams from last season in Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. State will host Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, the last two to close out the regular season.
The Bulldogs open the season Jan. 19 with a doubleheader against Chattanooga and Samford in Birmingham, Alabama. The next weekend, the squad travels south to Gainesville, Florida, for the 2019 ITA Kick-off Weekend along with host Florida, NC State and UCSB.
MSU opens its seven-match homestand in early February, with back-to-back doubleheaders against Alcorn State (Feb. 2) and Alabama State (Feb. 9). State will then host UAB (Feb. 10) and North Alabama (Feb. 16) to close out the early Starkville stretch, with a trip to South Florida (Feb. 22) then concluding non-conference play.
Moving into March, MSU opens SEC competition on the road at South Carolina (March 1). The Bulldogs trek back to Gainesville to meet the Gators (March 3). State's league road schedule features seven stops, including USC and Florida as well Ole Miss (March 10), Tennessee (March 22), Georgia (March 24), Vanderbilt (April 5) and Kentucky (April 7).
Following three conference road matches, State inaugurates home SEC action against Auburn (March 15). Also at A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, MSU will host Alabama (March 17), Missouri (March 19), Arkansas (March 31), Texas A&M (April 12) and LSU (April 14).
Postseason action will begin on Wednesday, April 17, as the Bulldogs pursue the 2019 SEC Championship in College Station, Texas. The opening two rounds of the NCAA Team Championship will take place May 3-5 at campus sites across the country. If the Bulldogs advance to the Round of 16, MSU will either host or travel to another campus site (a new format in 2019) to play that round for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship finals site – May 17-19 in Orlando, Florida. As always, the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will close out the year, running May 20-25 also in Orlando.
