STARKVILLE – History will be made at the MSU Soccer Field on Friday when Mississippi State hosts Lipscomb in both programs' first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is schedule for 4 p.m. CT, and the match will air live on SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN app.
The Bulldogs (9-6-2, 2-6-2 SEC) earned the right to host with an at-large berth thanks to the nation's toughest schedule and the No. 17 spot in the RPI. Lipscomb (14-4-2, 7-1-0 ASUN) won the ASUN regular season and tournament championship to book a spot in the bracket.
"They're tough," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "They're technical. They're efficient in front of the goal – a dangerous team, no doubt. They scored 43 goals. That's the first thing, and they've only given up 16, which is the same amount we have. They're very well-coached and efficient."
Friday's game is a rematch from 2016, when Lipscomb won, 1-0, in Starkville. Five players from each team that season remain on this year's rosters. Sophomore Gabriella Coleman may know the opponent best as she played with Lipscomb goalkeeper Kate Mason in high school. The pair played Coleman's freshman season together at Keller (Texas) High School and lost in the regional round of the playoffs to the eventual state champions.
MSU brings a 6-1-2 record in home matches into the contest, and is hoping for another crowd that cracks the top 10 in school history. Four such audiences have come in the past two years including this season's record-breaking 1,402 fans against South Carolina.
Admission is free for MSU students with valid student ID. Tickets are available online at HailState.com/tickets or at the door. All seating is general admission. Tickets are $8 for adults and children ages 12 and under priced at $3. Contact the MSU Athletic Ticket Office (662-325-2600) for more information.
HailState Rewards points and Bully's Kids Club points have been tripled for this match. Fans will receive up to 500 points for attending.
NCAA clear bag policy is in effect for Friday's game, and all fans will pass through metal detectors to enter the facility. Spectators may still bring cowbells, but pets are not allowed with the exception of service animals. Tents will be permitted on the grass berm seating as they have been throughout the regular season. Parking is available at no cost.
