STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's soccer team saw its historic season come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Lipscomb at the MSU Soccer Field.
In the 109th minute, Lipscomb got a free kick from midfield. The service from Dominique Diller glanced off Justis Bailey and into the net to end the game.
"We had thirteen corner [kicks] and we did score two goals that didn't count," Anagnost said. "It hurts more because it's the last one. But, we weren't good enough in front of [their] goal and we didn't make the plays in front of [their] goal that counted. We are going to have to swallow this bad tasting pill right now."
The Bulldogs outshot the Lady Bisons, 28-8, and had two goals waved off in the match. State took a season-high 13 corner kicks.
In the 21st minute, junior Hailey Zerbel took a free kick and sent the ball into the box for senior Carly Mauldin. Mauldin's header snuck past the goalkeeper, and the stands erupted, but the Bulldogs were called offsides.
Then, in the 73rd minute, the Bulldogs won a corner kick and appeared to score on junior MaKayla Waldner's header. Instead, MSU was called for goaltender interference.
The Bulldogs held Lipscomb without a shot for the first 50 minutes of the contest, and allowed just six through regulation. In the 93rd minute, freshman Zakirah McGillivary nearly repeated her game-winning goal from earlier in the year against South Carolina, but this time the keeper got just enough of the ball to push it over the bar.
MSU ends the year with a 9-7-2 record, which combined with last season gives State consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1996-97. The Bulldogs held opponents to a school-record 11.4 shots per game, and MSU's berth to the NCAA Tournament was the first in school history.
"This one really hurts, far more than normal," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "Reflecting, it's been an incredible year for this program and a remarkable season for me personally. From where we were [when I arrived] to now, it's [the change] just been dramatic and we can play with any team."
