SURPRISE, Ariz. – Niclas Braun could not ask for much better of a start to the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championship, as the Berlin, Germany, senior capped off a perfect 2-0 day to open up play at the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships Wednesday.
Braun opened up the day with a straight-set singles victory before teaming up with Giovanni Oradini in one of the last matches of the day to earn a hard-fought three-set doubles triumph.
Braun, ranked 109th nationally, carried over his hot streak that began at regionals with a 6-3, 6-4 upset triumph over Oklahoma's No. 70 Jake Van Emburgh, who was the 14th-seeded player in the draw.
In both sets, Braun and Van Emburgh held serve well, until Braun managed to go up a break late in the set to set up an opportunity serve it out. Both times, Braun capitalized, launching him into a second-round matchup with 96th-ranked Zeke Clark of Illinois, who advanced with a straight-set victory over Florida's No. 57 Duarte Vale. Match time between Braun and Clark is set for 10 a.m. CT Thursday on Court 14, which will be streamed live.
Braun then paired up with Oradini in the evening for the first round of doubles against Penn State's Constant De La Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth. The seventh-ranked and fifth-seeded Bulldog duo notched 6-3 score in the first set to go up early, but Penn State's tandem battled back to take the second set, 6-4, to set up a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. There, Braun and Oradini continued the strong play they have displayed since first teaming up last fall, taking a 10-6 decision in the tiebreaker to advance to Thursday's Round of 16 with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6) victory.
Thursday, Braun and Oradini will take on Georgia Gwinnett's Valentino Caratini and Ayed Zatar, who earned a strong three-set upset victory against Washington's 27th-ranked pair of Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer.
State's Trevor Foshey, who earned his way to this week's nationals with a finals appearance at regionals, dropped a tough 6-1, 6-1 decision to the top-ranked player in the nation, Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest. Foshey's run is not over, however, as the senior now turns his attention to the consolation singles draw, where he will face Iowa's Kareem Allaf Thursday at Noon CT.
