STARKVILLE – One of college tennis' major tournaments will feature three Mississippi State men's tennis players, as Bulldogs Niclas Braun, Trevor Foshey and Giovanni Oradini are set to play in the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
The tournament, to be held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Arizona, features 64 of the top singles players and 32 of the top doubles teams across all five divisions of college tennis – Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA.
Seniors Braun and Foshey reached the second-annual end-of-fall championships by each advancing to the singles final at the 2018 ITA Southern Regional Championships in October in Tuscaloosa. In the title match, the 109th-ranked Braun earned an exciting three-set victory against his teammate.
Braun is slated for a 1:30 p.m. CT start Wednesday against Oklahoma's 70th-ranked Jake Van Emburgh, who is the No. 14 seed in the draw.
Foshey will have a tall task ahead of him in the first round, where he will face Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos, the nation's top-ranked player and the defending NCAA Singles champion, at 3 p.m.
Braun and Oradini team up to form the nation's seventh-ranked doubles tandem and earned an automatic bid to the Oracle ITA by claiming the consolation doubles crown at the 2018 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., in a three-set thriller against top-ranked Bulldog teammates Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic.
At 7 p.m., Braun will team up with Oradini as the fifth-seeded duo against Constant De La Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth of Penn State.
This will be Oradini's second trip to the national fall championships, but his first in doubles. The Rovereto, Italy, native reached the consolation singles final in last year's inaugural tournament, held in Indian Wells, California. Last season, Braun and Foshey reached the Round of 16 of the doubles draw.
Should Braun and/or Foshey reach the singles final in Arizona, that match will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app, with a tape-delay aired later on ESPNU. Further, men's and women's singles champions will receive main draw wildcards to a 2019 Oracle Challenger Series event.
