McCowan Selected as Candidate for Senior CLASS Award

STARKVILLE – All-American Teaira McCowan added another national watch list to her resumé Friday as the Mississippi State center was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
The Bulldog senior, who has helped her team to a 7-0 record, currently leads the nation in blocks and is just 12 rebounds shy of breaking the MSU's career rebounds record of 1,108 set by LaToya Thomas (2000-03).
McCowan leads MSU in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.4 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. The SEC Preseason Player of the Year has also been named to the Lisa Leslie Watch List for the nation's top center, as well as the watch lists for the Wooden, Naismith and Wade trophies.
The Brenham, Texas, native has scored in double figures in 13 straight games going back to last season. She has tallied 20-plus points in nine of those, including 23 points in Wednesday's road win at Little Rock.
She also grabbed 15 rebounds in that contest for her fifth double-double of the year and 44th of her career, fourth-most among current NCAA Division I players.
McCowan ranks third in the SEC in rebounding, and she has made shots at a 71.3 percent clip that is fourth in the nation.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
McCowan has volunteered with special needs children and is on track to graduate in May with a degree in human development and family studies.
She is one of 30 candidates across the nation. A committee will select 10 finalists for the award in February who will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
McCowan returns to her home state Sunday as the sixth-ranked Bulldogs face No. 10 Texas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Tip from Austin is set for 1 p.m. CT on FS1.
