SAN JOSE del CABO, Mexico – After Friday's opening round in San Jose del Cabo, the Mississippi State women's golf team holds sole possession of third place in a tough field of competitors.
The Bulldogs had an impressive outing in the first round shooting 10-over par (294) despite windy conditions and challenging hole placements. Mississippi State will enter Saturday's second round two shots behind Texas for second place on the leaderboard.
"We had lots of success in today's round," said MSU Head Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "It was a true team effort. Conditions were again 15-to-20 miles per hour wind. A few tricky hole placements made for a challenging day, but our young squad did a great job of handling themselves with purpose and determination. We look forward to round two as we played ourselves into a pairing with some of the top teams in the country. This team has heart and commitment. Being able to watch them grow and learn is an honor. We will go out and play our game, without any additional expectations. Sticking to our process and rolling in putts!"
Freshmen Lauren Miller led the way for the Bulldogs. She birdied four of her first six holes to begin the day. Miller will go into round two one over par and tied for eighth place.
Sophomore Aubree Jones followed Miller carding a 2-over 73 in Friday's round. She will head into Saturday's round tied for 12th position.
Sophomore Blair Stockett is tied for 25th after firing a 74 and finishing 3-over par. She birdied No. 4 and No. 9 to finish even on the front nine.
Freshman Hannah Levi carded a 4-over par, 75 tying for 31st, while junior Clara Moyano finished 6-over par tied for 45th.
Auburn and the Tigers' Kaleigh Telfer pace team and individual leaderboards, respectively.
Saturday's round will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT. Live Stats can be found at BirdieFire.com
