PENSACOLA, Fla. – En route to Semifinal Saturday at the 2018 USTA Pensacola Futures Championships, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges had not dropped a set over three matches played.
The second-seeded Borges continued that trend, putting on another dominant display in the first semifinal match of the day by ousting third-seeded Dmitry Popko (ATP 551) of Kazakhstan by a 7-5, 6-2 mark. Popko, despite being currently ranked in the top 600, has been ranked as high as No. 178 in the world as recent as October 2017 and has played in qualifying in all four Grand Slam events.
Much like his three matches leading up to Saturday, Borges was dominant on serve, going 8-of-10 in service games while breaking Popko five times and tallying three aces.
Borges never trailed by a game in either set and staved off multiple comeback attempts by Popko—primarily in the first set when Borges mounted to a 4-2 lead.
The senior Borges, the highest seed remaining in the tournament, will take on sixth-seeded Ricardo Rodriguez (ATP 652) of Venezuela in Sunday's singles final. Rodriguez earned a straight-set victory over Isaiah Strode in the second semifinal match. Match time in Pensacola at the Roger Scott Tennis Center is set for Noon CT.
