PENSACOLA, Fla. – Nuno Borges could not have asked for a better way to close out his final fall season at Mississippi State.
The senior All-American capped off an incredible run at the 2018 Pensacola Futures Championships with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Venezuelan Ricardo Rodriguez (ATP 652) in Sunday's singles final.
In his five-match run, the second-seeded Borges never dropped a set en route to winning the fourth Futures singles crown of his career—his second in 2018. By winning Sunday's final, Borges earned 18 valuable ATP points that will go towards his ATP ranking, which will be updated Monday.
As he has all week on the clay courts in Pensacola, Borges dominated on serve, winning all 10 of his service games on Sunday while also breaking Rodriguez's serve twice. Borges also tallied four aces in the contest, two apiece in each frame.
Out of the gate, Borges and Rodriguez held serve effectively up until Borges, leading 5-4 at the time, broke Rodriguez at 30-40 to go up a set.
Borges' second break came much earlier in the second set, as he broke Rodriguez on ad to go up 3-1. From there, it was no looking back for Borges, as he mounted to a 5-2 lead before Rodriguez held to cut the deficit to 5-3. After that, Borges served it out en route to finishing his dominant tournament run.
Next Up For MSU …
With the fall slate officially in the books, the Bulldogs next turn their focus toward the 2019 spring dual match campaign with hopes of continuing the tremendous success they saw in the 2018 season. MSU's spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
