PENSACOLA, Fla. – In Thursday's first-round match, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges was off the court in just 56 minutes.
A similar scene happened Friday, with the senior All-American dispatching both of his opponents in that amount of time or quicker en route to punching his ticket to the semifinals of the 2018 Pensacola Futures.
The second-seeded Borges first took down Juan Alejandro Hernandez Serrano 6-2, 6-1 in a Round-of-16 match that lasted 56 minutes. Later in the day, Borges continued his hot streak by knocking off former Virginia Tech standout Patrick Daciek (ATP 1956) by a 6-3, 6-2 mark in the quarterfinals. That match was even quicker, lasting just 43 minutes.
Both sides held serve to open the first match of the day, but Hernandez Serrano (ATP 1333) broke Borges at 30-40 to go up 2-1. After that, Borges battled back by winning the next 10 games, ultimately building a commanding 5-0 lead in the second set before Hernandez Serrano won a game. From there, Borges served it out to reach the quarterfinal round.
Much like Thursday's match, Borges thrived in the service game, tallying four aces and only double-faulting once. Three of Borges' four aces came in the first frame.
In his second match of the day, Borges once again controlled the service game, winning all nine of his service games while also taking advantage of three double faults by Daciek. Borges was also perfect in break point opportunities, going 3-for-3. Unlike his first match of the day, Borges never trailed, but was able to fend off Daciek's comeback attempts.
Dating back to the beginning of the summer, Borges has reached the quarterfinals or better in all seven of his futures tournaments in 2018. His advancement also marks the second straight year he has reached the semifinals in Pensacola.
Borges is the highest seed remaining in the tournament, after top-seeded Fabrizio Ornago fell in the Round of 16. The reigning SEC Player of the Year Borges is now set to take on third-seeded Dmitry Popko (ATP 551) of Kazakhstan in Saturday's semifinals.
