STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State women's tennis' Emma Antonaki and Magda Adaloglou were among the top 60 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national singles rankings on Tuesday, as well as coming top 60 as a doubles duo. All three rankings are career highs for the two players.
The true freshman Antonaki struck the court with power in her inaugural semester as a Bulldog. The Athens, Greece, native notched two victories against opponents ranked in the top 60 this fall, including capturing the highest ranked triumph (25th) by a freshman in MSU program history this past weekend. Following her success, which also included a quarterfinal showing in the ITA Southern Regional Championships, Antonaki earned the nation's 55th-ranked singles seat rolling into the spring. It marks the highest singles ranking achieved by an MSU true freshman ever.
Also collecting a top-60 mark, sophomore Magda Adaloglou is No. 56 in Wednesday's rankings. Adaloglou toppled Wake Forest's 88th-ranked Eliza Omirou twice in her fall stretch. The Veria, Greece, product won three straight to advance to the ITA All-American Championships' qualifying action in September and also advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regionals.
As a tandem, Antonaki and Adaloglou were also tabbed the 57th-ranked duo following a 5-2 ledger on the fall. The pair posted two decisions over top-60 opponents, while earning a flight title at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic and reaching the Round of 16 at ITA Southerns.
The ITA's 2019 preseason team rankings will be announced Jan. 2, 2019. State finished 29th nationally this past spring, including a school-record five consecutive SEC victories in March and the highest ranked win in MSU tennis history, downing No. 2 Vanderbilt in Starkville. The next player rankings will be unveiled on Feb. 6.
The Bulldogs returned four letterwinners from 2018 this year. That quartet combined for 31-17 singles and 21-15 doubles ledgers during the semester.
Over six fall tournament appearances, the Bulldogs also introduced three newcomers to the State scene. The rookies combined for 17-15 singles and 11-15 doubles marks to open their MSU tenures.
As a squad, MSU capped the fall with a 48-32 (.600) overall team singles ledger, collecting the most fall singles victories since 2015.
Notable Maroon Moments From Fall 2018…
· Junior veteran Sara Lizariturry led the Bulldogs for the third straight season in fall singles action (11-3), being MSU's only athlete with back-to-back 10-win campaigns. Lizariturry captured multiple draw titles, taking singles crowns at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, SMU Invite and a doubles laurel in Dallas, alongside Janina Braun.
· Sophomore Magda Adaloglou plowed through three straight singles victories in pre-qualifying play at the ITA All-American Championships to advance to qualifying action.
· Rookie Emma Antonaki landed in the record books following a final fall singles victory over Washington's #25 Vanessa Wong, the highest-ranked triumph by a freshman in MSU program history.
· Three Bulldogs reached the Round of 16 or better at the ITA Southern Regional Championships – Antonaki & senior Anastasia Rentouli made the quarterfinals while Adaloglou advanced to the Round of 16
· Rentouli went 9-4 in singles and 5-3 in doubles this fall, upping her overall career record to 123-60, jumping her into a tied for 4thall-time at MSU in women's tennis victories with a semester to play. Her 72-30 singles record now ranks her tied for 2nd and her 51-30 doubles mark ties for 9th.
· Janina Braun earned her first career flight title in October, taking three straight matches for the honor, paired with Lizariturry. She also won the consolation singles crown of her draw at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
· Rookie Tamara Racine took four straight matches from Sept. 23-Oct. 7, finishing her first-fall slate 5-5 with a flight title at the SMU Invite.
· MSU's first-time duo of Antonaki and Rentouli closed the autumn stretch unphased at Arizona State's Thunderbird Invite, making them the only tandem from 13 programs in the field to go undefeated.
· Jackson, Mississippi's Meredith Roberts earned a consolation crown in her inaugural weekend at State at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic in September and she registered four singles wins overall during the term.
