STARKVILLE – A total of six Mississippi State men's tennis players graced the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's end-of-fall national rankings on Wednesday.
Four Bulldogs were listed in the 125-player singles rankings, while two MSU doubles teams were tabbed in the top-40 of the doubles rankings. State is one of just two Southeastern Conference teams with four or more ranked singles players.
Senior Nuno Borges once again led the pack in singles, coming in at 11th nationally. The Maia, Porto, Portugal, native posted a 5-1 ledger this fall while advancing to the singles final at the 2018 ITA All-American Championships in October.
Niclas Braun received the highest ranking of his career, coming in at No. 67. The Berlin, Germany, senior also saw success this fall, finishing 8-5 but won seven of his final eight matches, while also claiming the 2018 ITA Southern Regional Championships singles crown. That tournament run helped him punch his ticket to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, where he finished in the second round.
Two Bulldogs, sophomore Florian Broska and senior Trevor Foshey, made their career debuts in the singles rankings Wednesday, coming in at 78th and 93rd, respectively. Broska notched a pair of top-125 wins in the fall, including one over then-57th-ranked Duarte Vale of Florida. Foshey finished his fall with an 8-5 mark and reached the singles final of the ITA Southern Region Championships, highlighted by a three-set victory over Ole Miss' No. 14 Tim Sandkaulen.
In doubles, MSU's duo of Braun and Giovanni Oradini remained at the No. 7 spot after a solid fall campaign in which they finished 10-4 and reached the quarterfinals of the National Fall Championships. En route to that quarterfinal finish, Braun and Oradini knocked off Penn State's Constant De La Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth – now the nation's top-ranked tandem. Braun and Oradini also claimed the ITA All-American Championships consolation doubles title and the ITA Southern Region doubles crown this fall.
Rounding out MSU's ranked pairs is the team of Borges and Strahinja Rakic, who finished the fall ranked 36th nationally. In limited action in the fall, Borges and Rakic finished 3-2 and reached the consolation doubles final at the All-American Championships.
The ITA's 2019 preseason team rankings will be announced Jan. 2, 2019. State finished fifth nationally this past spring, its highest final ranking since 1998 after reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals and capturing the 2018 Southeastern Conference Tournament championship. The next player rankings will be unveiled on Feb. 6.
