MSU Defense Shines In Setback At No. 1 Alabama
November 10, 2018 | Football
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama (10-0, 7-0 SEC) continued to show why it has been the No. 1 ranked team in the country all season long Saturday as the Crimson Tide handed No. 16 Mississippi State (6-4, 2-4) a 24-0 setback at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Despite being unable to find much success offensively, the MSU defense played a very inspired contest against the potent UA attack, holding the Crimson Tide offense to its lowest offensive output of the season (305 total yards) - Alabama had amassed over 500 yards in every game this season prior to Saturday.
In addition, the Tide's 24 points were a season-low (29 vs. LSU last week was the previous low) and the team came in averaging 51.3 points per game.
Leading the way for the strong Bulldog defenisve effort was Willie Gay Jr. who had a career day with nine tackles, two sacks and an interception. Johnathan Abram also tallied nine stops along with a tackle for loss and two hurries of 'Bama quarterbacks. Jeffery Simmons had six tackles, two for losses. Cameron Dantzler and Chauncey Rivers also added to State's four-sack total in the game - against a team that had only allowed six sacks of its signal callers all season long.
Alabama established a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play and tacked on another score in the second quarter to go up 21-0 early on.
With time winding down in the first half and MSU hoping to gain some momentum entering the locker room at the half, the Bulldogs had two touchdown passes on the same drive - their longest of the afternoon - negated in the red zone due to penalties. A 41-yard field goal attempt then sailed just left as time expired.
The defenses on both sides dominated in the second half. MSU held the Tide to just 89 yards of offense and a single 49-yard field goal, including stopping the Tide on three straight rushes from second-and-goal at the MSU 4-yard line on UA's last possession.
Alabama's defense extended its current streak holding opponents scoreless to nine-straight quarters.
Next Up For MSU …
The Bulldogs return to Davis Wade Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 17, for their final home game of 2018, hosting Arkansas for Senior Day. Game time is set for 11 a.m. CT and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN.
