SAN MARCOS, Texas — Battling gusty winds on Monday, the Mississippi State women's golf team wrapped the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, Texas, with a 10th-place finish.
Despite having to navigate the tough conditions, the Bulldogs managed to put together some birdies en route to shooting a 298 on Monday. State recorded an 885 for the three-day event to wrap play five shots ahead of fellow SEC competitor Texas A&M.
"It was a challenging day today," Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "The winds picking up to 15-20 mph and the final-round hole placements made for a good test. We had some successful rounds, but we didn't have anyone playing great. Our 73's and 74's just have some cleaning up to do. A decision error, one up and down missed, and one costly missed shot gets you to those numbers. We are just one shot per person, per nine away from some great golf.
"We are doing the work to manage our mindset and make our body language a major priority. We beat some good teams like Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Ohio State, and we will build off that and look forward to teeing it up in a few days in Mexico."
Junior Clara Moyano finished her final round at the 6,185-yard, par-72 Kissing Tree Golf Course strongly, firing a 1-over-par 73. She finished the tournament in 29th with a 4-over 220.
Freshman Hannah Levi carded three birdies in round three to post her lowest round of the event with a 73. She carded a 221 for the three rounds to finish in a tie for 30th.
Aubree Jones, a sophomore, followed behind Levi in a tie for 38th. She finished with a 7-over 223 after wrapping Monday with a 76.
Freshman Lauren Miller put in a 77 for the final round, but her strong performance in the first two rounds helped her to a tie for 45th with a 222 total.
Sophomore Blair Stockett concluded play in a tie for 57th after shooting a 76 on Monday to card a 227 for the 54-hole event.
TCU claimed the team title with a 1-under 853. Florida State's Frida Kinhult finished 14-under to take the individual title.
MSU has a quick turnaround for its final action of the fall, traveling to San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, Nov. 2-4 for the Baylor-hosted Battle At The Beach.
