SAN MARCOS, Texas — A strong finish to a 36-hole day of golf put the Mississippi State women's golf team in a tie for 10th following the opening two rounds of the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, Texas.
The Bulldogs take an 8-over-par 587 into Monday's final 18 holes. Though the going was tough at times, Mississippi State managed to put together 28 birdies and follow an opening-round 296 with a 291 in the afternoon.
"We got off to a slow start today," head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We did gain momentum on the second nine to finish strong. We fought hard over the final 18 holes of the day, feeding from each other's enthusiasm for a better afternoon round. Thirty-six hole days are tough, but with every round we learn and get stronger."
Freshman Lauren Miller paced the Bulldogs to end the day in a tie for 24th with a 1-over 145. Miller opened with a 75, but she rallied in the second round and collected four birdies to shoot a 2-under 70.
Junior Clara Moyano added five birdies over her final 18 holes to end the day tied for 33rd with a 3-over 147. Moyano shot a 73 in the afternoon, shaving one stroke off her morning round.
Aubree Jones, a sophomore, joined Moyano in 33rd position. Jones had the low round of the morning for MSU with a 73 before wrapping her final 18 holes with a 74.
Freshman Hannah Levi carded a pair of 74s to end the day tied for 37th with a 148, 4-over par. Sophomore Blair Stockett rounded out the MSU lineup with a 75 and 76, respectively, that put her in a tie for 54th with a 151 (+7).
TCU stands atop the team leaderboard at 9-under, 567, while Florida State's Frida Kinhult leads the individual standings with an 8-under 136.
MSU opens final-round play with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. from holes 11, 12, 13 and 14. Fans can follow the Bulldogs' round on BirdieFire.com.
