LOXLEY, Ala. – Coach Dusty Smith and the Mississippi State men's golf team will look to close out their fall campaign with a strong performance at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational this weekend.
Play begins Saturday at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club with two rounds, 36 holes, of play beginning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. The event will conclude Sunday with one final round. Live results will be available all weekend on Golfstat.
"We are really excited to go out and compete this week," Smith said. "This is a big week because it's our next opportunity and it's another step towards becoming the team we know we can be."
Junior Peng Pichaikool is back in MSU's lineup after missing the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate - the Thailand native instead played in the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship as the 51st-ranked amateur in the world. In his two tournaments for State this season, Pichaikool picked up seventh place and runner-up finishes and boasts a 67.83 stroke average.
In its most recent rankings, Golfstat ranked Pichaikool as the 11th-best college golfer and third-best in the Southeastern Conference. He also was ranked 15th (4th in the SEC) by Golfweek.
Junior Garrett Johnson, freshman Ford Clegg and senior Ross Bell all return from Smith's lineup card that took sixth place at the Jerry Pate. Johnson finished tied for 18th at the event, while Clegg also placed within the top half of the player leaderboard. Austin Rose is in the fourth spot and played in MSU's first two tournaments of the season.
Sophomore Griffin Agent will also play in the event as an individual after he took a career-best finish when he tied for 10th place as an individual at the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational last week.
MSU began its 2018-19 campaign with an eighth-place finish at the Carmel Cup on Pebble Beach Golf Links in early September before taking a top 5 finish in Louisville, Kentucky, two weeks later.
The Golf Dawgs will play amongst a 12-team field which includes Indiana, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, North Alabama, Rice, Richmond, Southern Miss, Wake Forest, Wofford and host South Alabama.
MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"We are really excited to go out and compete this week. I think it's important for us as a team to focus on doing the simple things well this week. Our mindset has to be on us and what we can control. As we continue this journey as a team, I think it's crucial that we enjoy the climb and have fun competing. This is a big week because it's our next opportunity and it's another step towards becoming the team we know we can be."
