STARKVILLE – Heading into her first season with the Mississippi State women's basketball program, senior Anriel Howard has been named to the watch list for the 2019 Katrina McClain Award, the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Thursday.Howard, a Preseason All-SEC selection by select league and national media members, is one of 20 candidates on the watch list for the award, which is presented to the nation's top power forward in NCAA Division I. She is one of three SEC players on the list.
The Atlanta, Ga., native joins the Bulldogs after playing her first three years at Texas A&M, where she set the Aggies' career rebounds (1,002) and double-doubles (32) records. Howard enters her senior season the SEC's second-leading active career rebounder behind her new teammate Teaira McCowan.
In 2017-18, Howard averaged a double-double for the second-straight year, tallying 12.1 ppg and 12.2 rpg. She set the Aggies' season rebounds record mark with 439, and her 12.2 average ranked second in the SEC behind McCowan and seventh nationally.
Last season, Howard notched 20 of her 32-career double-doubles a year ago, and she collected 22 double-figure scoring games and had 10-plus boards in 30 games.
The Bulldogs were picked to repeat after winning the first league title by an MSU women's program. MSU won a nation's-best 37 games, the second-most in SEC history, and did so behind the second-longest win streak in conference annals (32 games). State posted the first undefeated regular season by a league squad in 20 years.
Mississippi State hosts NCAA Division II National Champion Central Missouri in a 6 p.m. exhibition on Nov. 2. The Bulldogs officially open the 2018-19 campaign in The Hump Nov. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.
