STARKVILLE – Back-to-back National Finalist Mississippi State women's basketball takes the court for the fansTuesday as it hosts its annual Maroon-White Scrimmage in Humphrey Coliseum.
The scrimmage begins at 6 p.m., and admission is free. Humphrey Coliseum doors open at 5:30 p.m. Fans can enter through the Mize Pavilion entrance, and the clear bag policy and walk-through metal detector security screening policies will be in place.
Vic Schaefer's squad will divide into teams and challenge each other before coming together to take on the men's practice squad in the two-hour event.
The Tuesday evening scrimmage gives fans the first opportunity to see a Bulldog squad that is the preseason pick to win the SEC after coming off the program's first SEC regular-season championship and second-straight national championship game appearance.
Senior Teaira McCowan, who was tabbed SEC Preseason Player of the Year by league media, leads Mississippi State following a standout junior season that saw her earn Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year and All-America accolades after averaging 18.2 ppg and 13.9 rpg. McCowan set SEC records with 29 double-doubles and 544 rebounds, and her rebounding total also ranked second in NCAA Division I single-season history.
The Brenham, Texas, native is joined by another 1,000-career rebounder in graduate transfer Anriel Howard. Howard finished second in the SEC behind McCowan in rebounding a year ago, and has averaged a double-double each of the last two seasons, including tallying 12.1 ppg and 12.2 rpg a year ago.
In addition to McCowan and Howard, State's senior class includes another pair of SEC veterans in Jazzmun Holmes and Jordan Danberry. Holmes finished second on the Bulldogs with 2.7 apg last season, while Danberry had a strong finish to the year, averaging 6.0 ppg against Louisville and Notre Dame in the Final Four.
Danberry had a solid showing in State's August tour of Italy, averaging 7.7 ppg and registering eight steals in the three games. Sophomore Chloe Bibby was also stellar in Italy, scoring at a 12.7 per-game clip.
Mississippi State hosts NCAA Division II National Champion Central Missouri in a 6 p.m. exhibition on Nov. 2. The Bulldogs officially open the 2018-19 campaign in The Hump Nov. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.
