TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A pair of members of the Mississippi State men's tennis team needed grittiness on Sunday, as seniors Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey both picked up a pair of hard-fought three-set victories to advance to the singles semifinals at the 2018 ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Braun and junior Giovanni Oradini paired up to move into the doubles semis as well.
Sunday's biggest victory of the day came from Foshey, as the St. Cloud, Fla., native pulled off the highest-ranked win of his career. Down 5-1 in third set, the 2018 Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP displayed the grit that earned him that honor in April, winning six straight games to knock off second-seeded and 14th-ranked Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Foshey then continued his hot streak in the quarterfinals with another come-from-behind victory, recovering from a set down to oust Alexey Nesterov of host Alabama 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to Monday's semifinals. Foshey is now set to take on Alabama's Patrick Kaukovalta at 10 a.m. CT Monday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Joining Foshey in the semifinals is State's 109th-ranked Braun. The senior from Berlin, Germany, picked up a pair of three-set triumphs as well, against foes from Tulane on Sunday. In the Round of 16, Braun downed Dane Esses 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 before repeating that performance against fellow German Luis Erlenbusch in the quarters. Braun will take on a Green Wave opponent for the third-straight match on Monday, taking on seventh-seeded and 60th-ranked Ewan Moore at 10 a.m.
In doubles, Braun and Oradini won for the third match in a row to advance to the semifinals. The seventh-ranked and second-seeded MSU tandem cruised past Alabama's sixth-seeded pair of Patrick Kaukovalta and Alexey Nesterov, 8-3, in the quarters. The State duo will take the court at 1:30 p.m. Monday against Louisiana's Pearse Dolan and Arthur Libaud.
In State's other action in the singles Round of 16 Sunday, the top-seeded and fifth-ranked Oradini was upset by LSU's Malik Bhatnagar in a tough three-set battle 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Also dropping a hard-fought three-setter was No. 4 seed and 43rd-ranked Bulldog Strahinja Rakic, who was upended by another LSU Tiger, Rafael Wagner, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Bulldog sophomore Florian Broska also saw his singles run come to a halt, dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Tulane's Moore.
