STARKVILLE – Redshirt senior Rhylee DeCrane now boasts sole possession of Mississippi State's single-season shutout record. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native stopped four shots as the No. 25/25 Bulldogs drew with Arkansas on Thursday night.
The contest was very physical from the opening whistle. In all, a season-high 43 fouls were called on the two teams.
"I still thought overall that we played well," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "Overall, I'm pleased with the performance. Obviously, we generated enough to score goals, but we've got to put a ball in the goal."
State appeared to have won the game in the 107th minute. Freshman Miranda Carrasco sent a long ball into the back side of the box where a diving Carly Mauldin headed it past the keeper. The crowd began to celebrate, but the Bulldogs were called offsides.
Arkansas nearly put home a goal of its own in overtime, with a flurry of action in the 104th minute. DeCrane came out to try to make a save but was caught out of position. Freshman Miranda Carrasco stopped the ball on the goal line for her second defensive save of the night, and DeCrane punched away the shot attempt on the rebound to end the threat.
"I'm overall very pleased with the character that our team exhibited tonight," Anagnost said. "It's a valuable point, Arkansas is a very good team. They're a team that no one wants to play, and I'm proud."
The Bulldogs fired 16 shots, putting 11 on goal, but Arkansas' Taylor Beitz stood strong for the clean sheet. Arkansas held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
"We were a tough team, and the unsung hero of this game is Andrea Tyrell," Anagnost said. "Tyrell changed the game for us. She was just fantastic, winning balls in the air, a two-way player and gutsy."
With the tie, the Bulldogs moved into 10th in the SEC and are currently in position to qualify for the conference tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama at the end of the month.
State will travel to Oxford, Mississippi on Sunday, Oct. 21 to face Ole Miss in a nationally-televised match on ESPNU. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT.
