OXFORD, Miss. – Mississippi State's soccer team lost to Ole Miss, 2-0, in Oxford on Sunday afternoon.
The Rebels (11-6-1, 5-3-1 SEC) scored in the 67th and 70th minutes to claim the Magnolia Cup for the 14th time.
"We're disappointed because, I thought, in both halves we outplayed them, but just not in the key areas," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "In the defending quarter of the field, we made two mistakes that you just can't make, and they capitalized on both of them."
Ole Miss scored the first goal of the match after State (9-5-2, 2-5-2 SEC) misplayed a long ball allowing the Rebels' CeCe Kizer to slip through for a breakaway. She shot low to redshirt senior Rhylee DeCrane's left to give the Rebels the lead.
Minutes later, MSU conceded a free kick from just outside the box. The Rebels played the ball short, then crossed it to the back post where DeCrane made a leaping save.
On the following play, the Rebels again crossed the ball to the back post where Gabby Little volleyed the ball towards the opposite post. DeCrane tried to punch the shot over the post, but could not get enough of her hands on the ball to stop the shot. The ball caught the post and trickled across the goal line.
"We created enough to score, and we just didn't put a ball in the net," Anagnost said. "In both phases, we weren't good enough, and we didn't deserve to win. It's just disappointing. I can't fault our kids for how hard they played, but we have to do what we're supposed to do where we're supposed to do it."
The Bulldogs outshot Ole Miss, 18-10 and put eight shots on target. MSU won eight corners to the Rebels' two, but couldn't find the net. Freshman Andrea Tyrrell had the Bulldogs' best chance of the day on a corner kick, heading the ball off the crossbar before heading her own rebound back to the keeper.
MSU will close the regular season at home on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT. The Bulldogs will host LSU while needing a win to have a chance to force their way into the conference tournament the following week.
