WEST POINT, Miss. – Heavy rains at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, forced the cancellation of Tuesday's Magnolia Invitational final round, but the Mississippi State women's golf team brought home some hardware with a second-place finish.
The Bulldogs were able to complete a few holes before the rain set in at Old Waverly Golf Club. The rains, combined with travel plans for some teams, caused the final round to be called just after 9:15 a.m.
"We hate that it ended without the opportunity to play heads up for the title in the final round, but weather is certainly beyond our control." Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Most importantly we were ready for this final round. To compete for a collegiate title is a feat in itself, and being at our home course was very special indeed. This team is working very hard and we are thrilled to have competed against and beat some very strong teams. With two events left for this fall season, we look to build off this strong showing. Hail State!
Several members of the Bulldog squad finished in the top 25 in individual standings.
Freshman Hannah Levi tied for third after carding a 3-under par 141, the best finish of her young career.
Sophomore Blair Stockett also had her best finish with a tie for sixth behind a 2-under par 142. Freshman Lauren Miller joined Levi and Stockett in putting together her best tournament, carding a 1-under par 143 to tie for 10th.
Sophomore, Aubree Jones tied for 22nd with a 2-over par 146. Before the rain intervened on Tuesday, Jones opened her round by holing her 201-yard second shot on the par-5 15th for an "albatross."
Veterans Athena Yang and Clara Moyano tied for 25th with 3-over-par 147 scorecards.
Katie Holt tied for 30th (+4), Kendall Wisenbaker finished in a tie for 45th along with Ela Grimwood at +7 and Teri Doss wrapped the event in a tie for 57th.
Kennesaw State won the team title with a 5-under par 283, one shot better than the Bulldogs. Auburn's Anika Bolcikova claimed the individual title with a 7-under 137.
Up next, the Bulldog squad travels to San Marcos, Texas, Oct. 28-29 for the Jim West Challenge.
