STARKVILLE – Looking to improve his already-impressive ATP ranking, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges is set to open play in the main draw of singles at the USTA Harlingen Futures on Tuesday.
The two-time All-American Borges, currently holding an ATP ranking of 506, is the No. 3 seed in the 32-player singles draw. Action will begin Tuesday morning at the Harlingen Country Club in Harlingen, Texas. The Maia, Porto, Portugal, senior looks to improve on last season's second-round finish at the same event.
In the main draw, Borges is the highest seed of a host of current collegiate players, including a familiar foe in Texas A&M's Patrick Kypson (ATP 695). Florida's Sam Riffice (ATP 714) also earned a spot in the main draw.
The two-time SEC Player of the Year is set to open play Wednesday against former University of Denver standout Henry Craig (ATP 716), who twice earned Summit League Player of the Year honors during his time with the Pioneers.
Next Up For MSU …
While Borges competes in Harlingen, the rest of the Bulldogs are preparing for the ITA Southern Regional Championships, to be held Oct. 18-23 at the Alabama Tennis Complex.
The tournament, hosted this year by Alabama, features a 128-player qualifying singles draw that begins Oct. 18 followed by the main draws on Oct. 20-23.
Last season, State saw great success at regionals, boasting both singles finalists, with Giovanni Oradini capturing the singles crown. In doubles, Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey reached the doubles final.
The finalists of the singles draw and the doubles champion earn automatic bids into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz., which Borges and a pair of Bulldog doubles teams have already earned bids to based on their play at the ITA All-American Championships last week in Tulsa.
