MSU Women’s Tennis Falls 4-3 To UNLV In ITA Kick-Off Consolation
January 27, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite a strong effort, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (2-2) could not outlast UNLV (3-1) Saturday, falling in a tight 4-3 decision to the Rebels in the consolation match of the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Rebels took an early lead, holding off the Bulldogs in doubles. On court 3, UNLV's Izumi Asano and Juliet Zhang defeated MSU's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-2. Following at No. 2, Bulldogs Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun overpowered Rebels Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li 6-2. In the deciding match on court 1, UNLV's En-Pei and Aiwen Zhu proved to be too much for State's Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak with a 6-3 victory to put the Rebels on top 1-0.
In singles, MSU and UNLV split the opening sets and the leads in all six matches would be maintained. UNLV would be first off the court as Asano upended the Maroon and White's Braun 6-2, 6-1 on court 2, extending the lead 2-0. The Bulldogs got their first point from the senior Vozniak with a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win against UNLV's Zhang.
UNLV extended the lead to 3-1 when Zhu downed MSU's Harrison 6-3, 6-2 on court 1. State would then bounce back to claim back-to-back victories on courts 4 and 5 to tie it 3-all. Both posting 6-4, 6-4 victories, MSU's Rentouli defeated UNLV's Bogoslavets at No. 4 and State's Lizariturry routed the Rebels' Li on court 5.
The deciding match came on court 3. After State's true freshman Adaloglou dropped the first set, she came back to force a second-set tiebreaker. However, UNLV's Huang was able to edge out the MSU rookie, winning 6-2, 7-6(4) to clinch the 4-3 victory.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs now return home to host Samford and UAB in a Sunday doubleheader on Feb. 4 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. MSU will face the Birmingham Bulldogs at 12 p.m. CT and the Blazers at 3 p.m. CT.
