MSU Women’s Tennis Falls 4-1 To No. 12 Texas In ITA Kick-Off Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite taking the doubles point, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (2-1) could not upend 12th-ranked Texas (3-0), falling 4-1 to the Longhorns Friday in the opening match of the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
State jumped out to an early lead after posting come-from-behind doubles victories on courts 1 and 2. The Longhorn duo of Fernanda Labrana and Marta Perez-Mur downed MSU's tandem of Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-3 on court 3. At No. 1, Bulldogs Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vonziak overcame a 4-2 deficit to win four-straight games and defeat Texas' Petra Granic and Anna Turati 6-4. In the deciding match, MSU's pair of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun overpoweredBojana Markovic and Biana Turati 7-5 after trailing 5-4 to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
However, the Longhorns showed their strength in singles, rebounding to take five of the six first sets. On court 1, UT's 10th-ranked Bianca Turati bested of MSU's Harrison 6-0, 6-1 to knot the team score 1-all. Quickly following, the Longhorns' Markovic upended State's Rentouli 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 to give Texas its first lead of the day.
Texas continued its momentum when the 32nd-ranked Granic held off MSU's Braun 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to extend the lead 3-1. Clinching the match was UT's No. 87 Anna Turati who outlasted State rookie Adaloglou 6-3, 6-1 on court 3.
The remaining two matches were suspended with State's Lizariturry leading Labrana 7-6(3), 2-0 on court 5 and MSU's Vozniak trailing 6-3, 5-5 to Perez-Mur at No. 6.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will face UNLV in the consolation round Saturday, Jan. 27, at 12 p.m. CT. The Runnin' Rebels fell in a tight 4-3 decision to No. 11 host Cal Friday.
