No. 13 Bulldogs Dominate Singles To Down Badgers In ITA Kick-Off Opener
January 27, 2018 | Men's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Faced with a 1-0 deficit after the doubles point, the 13th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (4-0) did not panic as it battled back to earn a 4-1 victory against Wisconsin (2-1) on Saturday to open up the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"Today was a great team win by our guys," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We've got a lot of confidence in singles and a lot of trust in each other right now. I was proud of how we battled back and got a lot of our first sets."
Wisconsin took the early lead by clinching the doubles point. On court 3, State's 41st-ranked pair of Florian Broska and Giovanni Oradini dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision to Badger tandem Osgar O'Hoisin and Daniel Soyfer. Court 1 saw MSU's 49th-ranked duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey drop a 6-2 decision to No. 9 Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge. Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic led 5-4 at No. 2 when play was suspended.
Despite dropping the doubles point, State once again relied on its outstanding singles lineup to get the victory, as the Bulldogs won in straight sets in all four matches that were completed.
On court 1, State's third-ranked Borges wasted very little time in dispatching the Badgers' Remy—earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory to knot the score up at 1-1. Braun, ranked 118th, likewise moved to 4-0 in 2018 dual match play with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph against UW's O'Hoisin at No. 4 to give MSU its first lead of the day at 2-1.
Court 5 saw yet another valiant battle by Broska, as the MSU rookie rallied from down 3-1 in the first set to take the final five games to go up a set. The freshman rode that momentum into the second set as he earned a 6-4 victory in the frame to put the Bulldogs a point away from the clincher.
After quickly posting a 6-2 decision in his first set on court 2, MSU's 29th-ranked Oradini held on to his lead in the second set on his way to a 6-2, 7-5 victory that sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.
When play was suspended after the clincher, Rakic was all square at 2-2 in the third set with Dodridge on court 3, while Foshey's match with Soyfer was suspended in a second-set tiebreaker at no. 6.
"I'm proud of how Giovanni and Florian fought in their second sets," Roberts added. "It was really good to see Nuno and Niclas win in straight sets again. Trevor and Strahinja both prolonged their matches, so that gave us a lot of confidence going forward."
With the win, State moves 3-0 against Wisconsin and 11-6 all-time at ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Oradini improved to 17-7 on the year, while Borges extended his win streak to 10 matches dating back to November without dropping a set. In dual match play, the reigning SEC Player of the Year has won six straight singles matches.
Next Up For MSU…
State has a quick turnaround as it will face either Kentucky or No. 14 Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. CT Sunday. The team that wins the Sunday contest will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, to be held Feb. 16-19 in Seattle, Wash.
