STARKVILLE, Miss – She might have been making her MSU debut, but freshman Aubree Jones played like a veteran on Monday for the Mississippi State women's golf team at the Ocean Course Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Jones followed up an even-par opening round with a 7-under 66 over her final 18 holes to sit in second place with a 139 total, the third-lowest 36-hole scorecard in program history.
She helped the Bulldogs end the day in ninth with a 17-over 601.
After playing the final 10 holes of her opening round at -2, Jones came out on fire in the second round, nothing nine birdies, including six on the front nine of the challenging Ocean Course.
She finished the day with a tournament-high 12 birdies.
"I was obviously extremely proud of Aubree today. She has really been growing on the mental game from when she stepped on campus," coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Katie (Holt) made some great decisions out there to be a consistent number two today. We struggled with the mental game with several players, and this course will not allow you to doubt yourself. Thankfully, we have one more round to play and get much needed experience for our young squad and finish strong."
Katie Holt also had a strong day, notching seven birdies en route to a 147 that put her in the clubhouse in a tie for 15th.
Idaho transfer Clara Moyano also made her Bulldog debut as a Bulldog and used a strong finish to wrap the day with a 160.
After joining the team last spring, Ela Grimwood opened her sophomore campaign with a 76 before carding an 80 in her second round.
Teri Doss, a last-minute replacement in the lineup for Kendall Wisenbaker posted a 164 on the day.
Mississippi State is back in action for the final round of The Ocean Course Invitational Tuesday at 8 a.m. CT.
