KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Aubree Jones had quite the Mississippi State debut, tying for third to help the Bulldog women's golf team take 10th place in the season-opening Ocean Course Invitational Tuesday in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The rookie from Covington, Tenn., followed a second-round 66 with a 76 on Tuesday to finish her first collegiate event with a 4-under-par 215. Jones added three more birdies in her final round to finish with a tournament second-most 15.
Jones and her Bulldog teammates battled windy conditions that hampered the challenging field, with the Bulldogs carding a final-round 317 to wrap the 54-hole event with a 918.
"It was a great week on a beautiful course. Everything was just clicking this week," Jones said. "I enjoyed this first tournament a lot. It was good to not be playing for myself anymore, like in junior golf. I am playing for my team and I have my coaches there to pump me up. It's definitely a great start to my college career."
Taking the crown in the event was North Carolina State, who notched a 5-over 881 over the two days. Jones finished one shot out of second, while Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho claimed the individual crown with a 12-under 207.
Junior Katie Holt and sophomore Ela Grimwood each fired a 235 for the two days to tie for 55th.
Clara Moyano tied for 66th with a 241 in her Bulldog debut, while Teri Doss rounded out the MSU lineup in 72nd with a 245.
MSU returns to action for the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla., September 23-25.
