STARKVILLE, Miss. — After an impressive and dominating sweep at the Falcon Classic two weeks ago, the Mississippi State cross country teams are back in action Friday at the 44th Annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.
The 24th-ranked women have won both their meets this year and will compete against SEC schools Georgia and Tennessee, in addition to ranked foes Villanova (15), Utah State (21) and Georgetown (23).
The MSU men are one of 41 teams competing in a field that features No. 10 Iona, No. 17 Georgetown and No. 28 Columbia, as well as Georgia and Tennessee.
"I've been pleased with our first two meets, but I know there is still a lot more in us," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "I've seen veteran leadership, and I like how our younger runners have performed. This is a talented field with other SEC and Power 5 schools, along with ranked teams, and this will be our biggest challenge yet. We are coming off a great two weeks of training and hopefully that will translate into a great meet for us."
Junior Shannon Fair made her 2017 debut at the Falcon Classic, winning the 6K with a time of 21:31.44, while sophomore Stephanie Peterson placed second for the second time this year.
On the men's side, Aaron Phelps turned in an 8K time of 26:02.89 to claim medalist honors at the run in Montevallo, Ala., while Stephen Jones was a close second at 26:12.46.
"Every course is different, and this is an event we haven't competed at in several years," Franks said. "Hopefully, the weather will provide for ideal conditions to run. Either way, this will definitely give us a great feel for what we have to do as the season is winding down."
This year's meet will be held at the Goodman Cross Country Course. The men will begin their 8K at 10 a.m. CT, with the women's 6K to follow.
