
Pichaikool Leads MSU To Fourth Place After Day One At Bearcat Intercollegiate

CINCINNATI, Ohio. – Mississippi State men's golf had an outstanding start to its season and the Dusty Smith era as it sits in fourth place through Monday's opening two rounds at the Bearcat Intercollegiate.

Sophomore Peng Pichaikool picked up where he left off last season, sitting in a tie for second after firing a 9-under-par 133 at Coldstream Country Club.
Â
Pichaikool led the field with 14 birdies, including shooting 9-under on the back nine, and followed an opening-round 67 with a 66 in the afternoon, the third-lowest round of his career.

Pichaikool enters Tuesday's final round one shot back of clubhouse leader Daniel Wetterich of Ohio State. He led MSU to a 13-under 555, eight shots back of team leader Kentucky and four shy of second-place Arkansas.

"Peng was great today and played some huge rounds for our team," head coach Dusty Smith said.

Freshman Cameron Clarke, making his MSU debut, and junior Taylor Grant each carded back-to-back rounds of 70 to wrap the day tied for 21st at 2-under 140.

"Taylor and Cameron were solid and consistent all day," Smith said. "Everyone did their part today from top to bottom."
Â
Junior Austin Rose capped the day 1-over and tied for 29th, while Griffin Agent, another debuting Bulldogs, sits in a tie for 34th at 2-over 144.

Sophomore Garrett Johnson rounded out the lineup in a tie for 65th with a 151.

"I'm really proud of how we played today as a team," Smith said. "We had all 6 guys in it all day and I thought the guys handled the day very well and competed hard from start to finish."

"We need to clean up some simple mistakes in order for us to compete at the highest level tomorrow," Smith said. "We are looking forward to the opportunity."

Play resumes for the final round Tuesday morning at 7:35 a.m. CT, but MSU will not tee off until an hour later.
