GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the Debbie Southern Fall Classic completed, the final day was highlighted by Mississippi State's Caroline Kelly capturing the singles title in Flight 9 of the three-day tournament on Sunday.
The junior Kelly triumphed against Texas' Chelsea Crovetti in a tough three-set battle - 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 - to finish the weekend a spotless 3-0 in singles. Kelly was the only Bulldog this weekend to go undefeated in both singles and doubles (6-0 overall).
In the Flight 1 consolation title match, MSU rookie Magda Adaloglou upended Ole Miss' 91st-ranked Anna Vrbenska in straight sets - 7-6(4), 6-3 - for the first ranked victory of her young Bulldog career.
State junior Anastasia Rentouli outlasted Wake Forest's Eliza Omirou 7-6(3), 7-6(3) for a tough victory in the third place match for Flight 3.
In Flight 5, Bulldog sophomore Sara Lizariturry fell to Tennessee's Johanna Silva 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in that bracket's third place match Sunday.
In an additional match, Bulldog newcomer Janina Braun completed a come-from-behind victory against host Furman's Katty Weymouth 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
"We found a way to overcome many challenges and won some tight battles that could have gone either way," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Overall, I am proud of the way we competed at our first event. Every one of our girls picked up quality wins in their respective draws. We all learn so much about each other at these fall tournaments and I look forward to getting back to work on areas we need to improve. We have such a hard-working group of girls. They compete well and are fun to work with."
