McBride Advances To 800m Semis In London

LONDON – Brandon McBride did what he does best Saturday at the 2017 IAAF World Championships. Survive and advance.
The former Mississippi State All-American and NCAA champion competing for Team Canada, ran a time of 1:45.69 in the 800m run to qualify for Sunday's semifinals.
His mark was the third best of day, while the Netherlands' Thijmen Kupers currently has the best time of 1:45.53, followed by American and former Texas A&M standout Donavan Brazier at 1:45.65.
The finals at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park are set for Tuesday, August 8.
"Brandon ran a very smart race today," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "He made sure he didn't put himself in a bad position, and I fully expect him to do the same tomorrow night. Brandon is very excited about reaching his goal of making the world championship final. He knows once you make the final, anything can happen. I look forward in watching his semi-final race (Sunday). It will be very exciting."
Also competing on Saturday was former All-American and SEC champion Erica Bougard in the heptathlon.
The Byhalia, Miss., native stands in 17th place following four events on Saturday with 3,628 points. Germany's Carolin Schafer sits in first with 4,036 points.
Bougard's best finish of the day was third in 200m dash at 23.66. She also tied her personal best in both the high jump at 6-3.5 and shot put at 41-6.5. In the 100m dash, she placed fourth at 13.24.
Sunday's final heptathlon events feature the long jump, javelin and 800m.
