Bulldogs Set To Host Stephen F. Austin in 2017 Regular Season Opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Another preseason is in the books as Mississippi State begins its 23rd season of soccer and the Tom Anagnost era on Friday.
MSU hosts Stephen F. Austin in the regular season opener at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the game being streamed online on SEC Network + with Anthony Craven and Robbie Kroger on the call.
"Stephen F. Austin is a very good team," Anagnost said. "They have been a winning program for a long, long time with double-digit wins every year. They know how to win and it is going to be a mighty test in front of our home fans on opening night. We all —our staff and every player— have been eagerly waiting for this day and this night to happen, and we are excited to show everybody who we are."
Admission to the match is free, and fans are encouraged to help set a new single-game attendance record at the MSU Soccer Field. The current record is 1,327, which was set against Florida on Oct. 16, 2015.
Free pizza will also be served to students in attendance, and the first 100 students will have a chance to win $10,000.
In addition to Anagnost's debut, the contest is also the first since Carly Mauldin, Mallory Eubanks and Catalina Perez were named to the 2017 Southeastern Conference Preseason Watch List on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs look to build on last Friday's 1-0 exhibition win against Memphis on the home pitch. Olivia Hernandez netted the winner in that contest with a header in the 31st minute.
Gabriella Coleman and Kristen Malebranche also found the net during preseason action in a hard-fought 3-2 setback against No. 7 Florida in Gainesville.
Friday's opener will be the first meeting between State and SFA on the pitch.
Scouting The Ladyjacks
SFA is coming off a 13-5-0 season in which it finished second in the Southland Conference with a 9-2 ledger in league play. In the preseason, the Ladyjacks tied Rice 1-1.
The Ladyjacks return the 2016 Southland Conference Midfielder of the Year in Hanna Barker, who also earned first team all-conference honors. The senior tied for the league's points lead with 30 and led the conference with 10 assists.
Next Up For The Bulldogs
After facing SFA, MSU will host Missouri State at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 20, at the MSU Soccer Field. The match is free to the public and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
Prior to Sunday's game, the Bulldogs will be signing autographs at MSU's Fan Day on Saturday. Fan Day festivities run from 4-6 p.m. in the Palmeiro Center, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m.
