Bulldogs Host No. 16 Kentucky To Close Out 2017 Regular Season
May 04, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the final time in the 2017 regular season, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (34-18, 8-13 SEC) will take to the field at Nusz Park, welcoming the 16th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (32-13, 11-10 SEC) to Starkville for the last weekend of series of the year.
The weekend will feature two nationally-televised contests, as the first two games of the series will be shown on the SEC Network, with Courtney Lyle and Leigh Dakich on the call. Friday's game (6:30 p.m. CT) will be shown as a part of the Network's Bases Loaded coverage, while Saturday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Sunday's game, set for 1 p.m., will be live streamed on SEC Network +, with Anthony Craven on the call for the season finale. All three games can be viewed online by going to WatchESPN.com or accessing the ESPN app.
Due to the overlap between Friday's game and spring graduation ceremonies, different parking measures will be put into place for fans. Extra golf cart shuttles will be available to transport fans to Nusz Park, while the softball outfield and Holliman (next to A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre) parking lots will be held for softball patrons only.
A number of big-time giveaways are in store for fans that make their way to Nusz Park for the final weekend of regular season play. The first 100 fans on Friday will receive a free Cinco de Mayo snow cone, with margarita and piña colada flavors available. Fans will be able to purchase snow cones all weekend, as well.
Saturday will be Starkville Parks & Rec Day, while also being a double Hail State Rewards points game and HSR Prize Pickup Day. Senior Day festivities will be Sunday following the 1 p.m., series finale. The Bulldogs will honor seniors Katie Anne Bailey, Olivia Golden, Amanda Ivy, Caroline Seitz and Alexis Silkwood, along with graduate assistant manager Rachel Fox.
Sunday will also be MSU's annual Bark At The Park game, as fans are welcome to bring their dogs to the stadium and take them on the field following the Senior Day ceremony. All dogs must be on leashes and have up-to-date shots.
Prior to this weekend, the Bulldogs and Wildcats have met 53 times, with the Maroon and White holding a 28-25 advantage in the series. State is 17-7 in Starkville against UK, but have dropped the last five contests to the Wildcats.
State is looking to bounce back after a rough weekend on the road against the ninth-ranked Auburn Tigers. Despite faltering, the Dogs were highlighted by the play of senior Caroline Seitz, who has been on a tear the last three weekends of conference play. Seitz leads the conference in SEC play with six home runs, 25 RBI, a .703 slugging percentage and 45 total bases. The senior has driven in 21 runs in her last 10 games and is currently riding a career-high 14-game hitting streak. Last weekend, the former NFCA, USA Softball and SEC Player of the Week hit two home runs, upping her career total to 36, one away from tying for second place on the MSU all-time homers list.
Along with Seitz, the Dogs have been paced by Bevia Robinson, who leads the team in batting average (.345), hits (51) and stolen bases (29).
On the defensive side of things, the Bulldog pitching staff has been phenomenal so far in 2017. The group's 1.92 ERA ranks seventh in the SEC and 25th in the NCAA. The staff's ERA is on pace to be the first sub-2.00 average since recording a 1.33 ERA during the 1998 campaign.
Cassady Knudsen paces the team with a 1.69 ERA, good for 15th in the SEC and 52nd in the NCAA. Knudsen is also fifth in the SEC and seventh nationally with 3.38 hits allowed per seven innings and fifth in the SEC, 31st in the NCAA with 8.3 strikeouts per seven frames.
After this weekend, the Bulldogs will wait to see their opponent for the opening round of the 2017 SEC Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. The tournament begins Wednesday, May 10.

Silk Having Banner Senior Season…
Senior lefty Alexis Silkwood has been putting her name all throughout the MSU record books since she arrived on campus in 2014. Now in her final year, she has already crowned herself the new MSU K Queen, became the first pitcher in Bulldog history to record over 500 strikeouts and 600.0 innings pitched. State has 15 come-from-behind victories so far in 2017, including walk-off victories against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 11, Samford on March 4 and Louisiana Tech on March 24. She is the only head coach since MSU reached varsity status in 1997 to have a ranked win in every year of their tenure.
