STARKVILLE, Miss. – Two members of the Mississippi State women's tennis team learned Wednesday that they have earned at-large bids to the 2017 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, to be held May 24-29 in Athens, Georgia. Senior Jasmine Lee was named the No. 7 overall seed for this year's NCAA Singles Championship, while the duo of Lee and true freshman Lisa Marie Rioux were selected as the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
The 2017 NCAA seedings earned by Lee and Rioux mark the highest in MSU women's tennis history in both singles and doubles.
Currently ranked eighth nationally, Lee earned a top 16 seed in the 64-player NCAA Singles draw for the second straight year and, as such, will become the first MSU women's tennis player ever to earn multiple ITA All-America honors. A 2016 NCAA quarterfinalist, she has posted incredible 23-6 overall and 19-3 dual match (10-2 SEC) records this year, representing State in all contests at the No. 1 position. The Kaohsiung, Taiwan, native has posted 13 wins against ranked foes, and has bested herself in achieving the highest women's singles ranking ever for MSU at No. 8 in the country last week. Lee was also honored with First-Team All-SEC honors last week for the third consecutive season.
The third-ranked State duo of Lee and Rioux achieved a top 8 seed in the 32-team NCAA Doubles field and, as such, will become only the second tandem from State to ever earn ITA All-America status, joining MSU's 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard. Lee and Rioux have composed remarkable 24-5 overall and 16-4 dual match (8-3 SEC) records this year, also playing all of their contests at the No. 1 position in MSU's lineup. The pair has ousted 10 ranked opponents this season. In just their second tournament together this past fall, the tandem went on a run at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to make its way through the qualifying round and all the way to the quarterfinals of the main draw.
"Jasmine has had another stellar year," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She has worked hard and led our team through another successful season. She and Lisa have also had tremendous success as a doubles team. The pair have made a major impact on our program and helped us raise the bar even higher for Bulldog Tennis. We are all looking forward to a strong showing from these two at Nationals."
The draw for the 64-player NCAA Singles and 32-team Doubles Championships will be released closer to the start of the tournament. First-round action begins Wednesday, May 24, at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
