ATHENS, Ga. – Ending one of the most successful singles careers in program history, Mississippi State women's tennis senior Jasmine Lee dropped her opening-round match Wednesday in the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
On Wednesday, the No. 7-ranked and seeded Lee dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to USC's 33rd-ranked Jessica Failla.
Overall, Lee composed a remarkable record of 23-7 this season to finish her career with a 72-27 record in singles. Of her 72 victories, 43 have come against ranked opponents and all 27 setbacks have come against ranked opponents. Her 72 victories tie her for second in the MSU record book for career singles wins. Her winning percentage of .727 gives her sole possession of first place in that category.
Lee became MSU's first singles ITA All-American in 2016 as a 9-16 seed in the NCAAs and bettered that this year as the No. 7 seed, becoming MSU's first-ever two-time All-American. Last season, Lee became the first MSU women's singles player ever to advance to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals and the first MSU men's or women's player to do so since Bulldog Thomas Dupré in 1998.
Despite Wednesday loss, Lee's MSU career is not over as she and freshman Lisa Marie Rioux will represent MSU in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship starting Thursday at 1 p.m. CT. State's second-ranked and seeded duo will face Kansas' 37th-ranked Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia in the first round at a time to be announced. The MSU tandem has posted a 24-5 record together this season with 10 wins coming against ranked opponents.
As the No. 2 seed in the doubles draw, Lee and Rioux become the first MSU duo since 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard to earn ITA All-America honors in doubles.
