Bulldogs Fall To No. 21 BYU In NCAA Tournament Opener

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In their 2017 NCAA Tournament opener, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (36-21) fell in an 8-0 six-inning decision to the 21st-ranked BYU Cougars (45-11) on Thursday.
The Bulldogs will next play in the second game on Friday, slated for 4:30 p.m. CT. State will face Fordham, who lost to No. 11 Utah in five innings, 10-0.
BYU struck first with a solo home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Cougars added three more runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-0.
MSU threatened in the fourth, using a hit by pitch and a Sarai Niu single to put two on. However, the Cougars were able to escape the Bulldog threat and tacked on another run in the home half to go up 6-0.
The Cougars delivered the final blow in the sixth, using a pair of RBI singles to close out the 8-0 ballgame in six innings.
Alexis Silkwood earned the start for the Dogs, going 2.1 innings. Cassady Knudsen threw 3.0 innings in relief, striking out one. Holly Ward closed out the game for State, entering in the sixth.
