No. 18 MSU Caps Super Bulldog Weekend With 5-2 Win
April 09, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its home finale of the 2017 season, No. 18 Mississippi State men's tennis team (17-5, 8-2 SEC) was too much to handle for visiting LSU (9-15, 3-8 SEC) as MSU downed the Tigers to cap Super Bulldog Weekend with a 5-2 win.
Sunday's win improved MSU's record to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in SEC play. The Bulldogs have now defeated the Tigers in 8 of the last 10 meetings.
"Today's win was a great way to cap our home season at A.J. Pitts," head coach Matt Roberts said. "The crowd was amazing and we had a lot of energy in the match. We played well and I'm happy that we could give our loyal fans a great performance."
The conference win for the Maroon and White gives MSU its most SEC wins in a season since 2015's squad that earned nine on the year.
Following Sunday's Senior Day recognition for Mate Cutura and Vaughn Hunter, the Bulldogs and Tigers battled it out for the doubles point in front of a great home crowd at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic didn't waste anytime with their Tiger foes as the pair earned a quick, 6-0 decision on court three. The sophomore duo is now 10-8 on the season as the pair earned its second-straight victory. The doubles point would be decided by the seniors however, as Cutura and Hunter won a thrilling, 6-4 match over No. 90 Gabor Csonka and Julian Saborio.
"I'm proud of the fight and grit our two seniors have shown all season," Roberts said. "It's poetic justice for those guys to clinch the doubles point for us on Senior Day. I know our guys are all very happy for those two and that was a great win."
The ranked doubles win for Cutura and Hunter was the pair's second this season and fifth of their career. The senior tandem is now a team-best 6-2 in SEC play after back-to-back wins over the weekend. No. 21 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey's match against No. 39 Jordan Daigle and Justin Butsch was suspended at 5-5 following the clinch.
In singles action, the Bulldogs would receive back-to-back quick decisions on courts five and four to jump out 3-0 over LSU. Giovanni Oradini defeated LSU's Agie Moreno, 6-1, 6-0, before Niclas Braun took care of Nikola Samardzic, 6-0, 6-3. The singles win for Oradini is his 11th overall this season, while Braun earned his 15th on the year.
Leading 3-0, it would be Simon Baudry's straight-set win on court six to clinch the Bulldog win as the freshman downed Rafael Wagner, 6-4, 6-3. The victory for Baudry was his first SEC win of the season as the Bulldog stepped up big following his insertion into the lineup.
"Simon played great today," Roberts said. "This was a great experience for him to get a quality SEC win under his belt and play a match for the first time at A.J. Pitts. We have a solid lineup capable of stepping in at any point for us and I think Baudry's ability speaks to our depth as a team."
Following the clinch, No. 4 Borges would add to the Bulldog lead as the sophomore defeated another ranked opponent. No. 48 Jordan Daigle would be the sophomore's latest victim after Borges fought back from a second-set deficit to win, 6-4, 7-6(3). The ranked win was Borges' 17th of the season and 22nd of his career.
"Nuno did not want to lose today," Roberts said. "When he's determined to win like that, he's extremely tough to beat. That was a very impressive turn around in the second set to flip his match."
On court two, Cutura would give a fantastic effort against No. 76 Justin Butsch, but would fall in a tough battle, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6) to cap the final score at 5-2.

The Bulldogs will travel to Florida and South Carolina for their final weekend of the regular season on Friday and Sunday. MSU will be idle until the start of the SEC Championship on April 26-30.
