MSU Welcomes No. 24 Arkansas To Starkville For Pivotal SEC Series
April 21, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Looking for their third-straight SEC series win, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (32-14, 6-9 SEC) play host to the 24th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (27-16, 5-13 SEC) in a pivotal weekend matchup in Starkville.
All three contests of the Saturday-Sunday-Monday series will be nationally televised on the SEC Network, with Jenny Dalton-Hill and Mark Neely on the call. First pitch from Saturday's contests is set for 7 p.m. CT (pushed back due to inclement weather), with Sunday and Monday's games set for 6 p.m., starts. Fans can also access the broadcasts online through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
A number of big-time giveaways are in store for fans that make their way to Nusz Park this weekend. The first 250 fans on Saturday will receive a free VANNtastic garden gnome, as well as Bulldog Softball emoji magnets. Saturday will have free adidas Bulldog Softball t-shirts to the first 250 fans at Nusz, while Sunday is Kids' Day At The Park, as kids can run the bases postgame. Sunday's game will also feature a petting zoo that will showcase numerous animals, including a kangaroo.
Prior to this weekend, the Bulldogs and Razorbacks have met 58 times, with the Maroon and White holding a 33-25 advantage in the series. State is 19-10 in Starkville against UA and have won the last five matchups. The two squads have met nine times in the Vann Stuedeman era, with MSU holding a 7-2 advantage.
State is looking for its third-straight SEC series win this weekend, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since winning three straight in 2014 (No. 3 Alabama, at No. 4 Tennessee, Arkansas). Propelling last weekend's series win was the hot bat of Caroline Seitz, who went 7-for-10 (.700) with four home runs (two grand slams) and 14 RBIs. She became the first player in school history to hit a grand slam in back-to-back games and the first to hit four home runs in a weekend series. Her 14 RBIs also bested the 13 total runs Georgia scored all weekend.
For her efforts, Seitz was named the SEC, Louisville Slugger NFCA and USA Softball Player of the Week. She became just the second player in school history to win all three major weekly awards in the same week, joining former MSU All-American Iyhia McMichael (2004).
Along with Seitz, the Dogs have been paced by Reggie Harrison, who leads the team with batting average (.346), hits (45), doubles (11), slugging percentage (.554) and on-base percentage (.465). Calyn Adams has also been a dominant force for MSU in conference play, as her .368 clip paces State in league games.
On the defensive side of things, the Bulldog pitching staff has been phenomenal so far in 2017. The group's 1.69 ERA ranks sixth in the SEC and 15th in the NCAA. The staff's ERA is currently the lowest since recording a 0.81 ERA during the 2006 campaign.
Alexis Silkwood leads MSU with a 1.50 ERA (13th SEC, 42nd NCAA). Also dominating has been Cassady Knudsen, who is third in both the NCAA and SEC with 2.96 hits allowed per seven innings and fourth in the SEC and 18th nationally with 9.0 strikeouts per seven frames.
After a weekend at home, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the final time in 2017, heading to The Plains to take on Auburn in a three-game series from April 28-30. All three contests will be live streamed on the SEC Network +, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.

MSU In The RPI…
The Bulldogs come in at No. 34 in this week's RPI rankings. So far this year, the Dogs have earned wins against Texas A&M (No. 5), Alabama (No. 14), South Carolina (No. 22), Georgia (No. 26) and Fresno State (No. 46). So far this year, 11 of State's wins this year have come against Top 100 programs.
Winning The Battle Of The Bulldogs…
The Bulldogs captured their second-straight SEC series victory this past weekend, taking down No. 19 Georgia in Athens. Leading the way was senior Caroline Seitz, who tallied four total home runs on the weekend, including grand slams in the first two games of the series. The series win is the first for MSU against UGA since 2008 and first in Athens since 2007.
A Grand Ole Time In Athens For Seitz…
To say that Caroline Seitz had a monster weekend in Athens would be an understatement to most, as the senior finished last weekend 7-for-10 with 14 RBIs, four home runs (two grand slams), four runs scored, a scorching 1.900 slugging percentage and a .667 OBP. She became the first in school history to hit four home runs in an SEC weekend series and became the first Bulldog since Mackenzie Toler (May 2, 2015 at South Carolina) to hit two home runs in a game.
Seitz's home run-fest this past weekend spearheaded MSU's second-straight SEC series win of the year, as State took down South Carolina at home the weekend prior. It's the first time since 2015 that MSU has won multiple SEC series in a campaign, as that year the Dogs took down No. 19 Texas A&M at home and Arkansas on the road.
Seitz Caps Insane Week…
Earlier this week, Caroline Seitz peeled in SEC Player of the Week, Louisville Slugger NFCA National Player of the Week and USA Softball Collegiate Co-Player of the Week honors. Seitz becomes just the second player in school history to receive the NFCA, USA Softball and SEC honors in the same week. Former MSU All-American Iyhia McMichael did the same in 2004.
The Birmingham, Ala., native becomes just the second player in Mississippi State history to earn the NFCA weekly honor, joining former MSU All-American Iyhia McMichael, who won the award twice in her career (April 1, 2003 and Feb. 25, 2004). She is also the third player in program history to earn the USA Softball weekly honor. The last Bulldog to receive the award was current MSU director of operations Jessica Cooley (March 6, 2012). McMichael was the first in State's history to receive the honor, earning it on Feb. 24, 2004.
The MSU senior is the 18th Bulldog to receive the SEC's Player of the Week award and first since 2012. That year Ka'ili Smith (March 5) and Cooley (April 16) earned the award. The weekly conference laurel is the first for Seitz in her career. She is the first MSU player to earn any SEC weekly honor since teammate Alexis Silkwood pulled in two SEC Pitcher of the Week awards during the 2015 season.
Pitching Staff On Fire…
State's pitching staff has been stellar through 46 games in 2017.
Silk Rewriting The Record Books…
Senior lefty Alexis Silkwood has been putting her name all throughout the MSU record books since she arrived on campus in 2014. Now in her final year, she has already crowned herself the new MSU K Queen, became the first pitcher in Bulldog history to record over 500 strikeouts and 600.0 innings pitched. During Super Bulldog Weekend, she captured her 56th-career victory, making her the all-time winningest pitcher in MSU history and against Georgia made her 136th-career appearance, taking over first in that category as well.
- 1st in wins (57)
- 1st in strikeouts (536)
- 1st in complete games (49)
- 1st in innings pitched (632.0)
- 1st in appearances (136)
- 2nd in starts (90)
- T-3rd in shutouts (13)
- T-3rd in saves (8)
Late Innings, Our Innings…
Under the leadership of head coach Vann Stuedeman, State has been a force in the late innings and nothing is more evident of that than the 70 comeback wins the Bulldogs have amassed in her tenure. MSU tallied 10 in 2016, including an early-season comeback against No. 23 South Alabama and another against No. 11 LSU at home.
State has 12 come-from-behind victories so far in 2017, including walk-off victories against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 11, Samford on March 4 and Louisiana Tech on March 24. The Dogs rallied from two down against Southern Miss on March 28, scoring three in the seventh to take the lead and the win.
The Dogs are also 23-0 when leading after five and 21-0 when leading after six frames. In games tied after five, State is 3-2, while going 2-1 when even after six.
Ranked Wins Keep Coming…
With victories against No. 21 Fresno State in Mexico, at No. 5 Texas A&M, against No. 8 Alabama and two at No. 19 Georgia, Stuedeman now has at least one ranked win in all six years she has been at the helm of the Bulldog softball program. She is the only head coach since MSU reached varsity status in 1997 to have a ranked win in every year of their tenure.
