Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach of the Week: Lynell Johnson
March 08, 2017 | Baseball
Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to honor pediatric patients and celebrate their inspirational stories. This week, our Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Lynell Johnson of Crystal Springs. Â
In November 2015, Lynell began experiencing knee pain. He played on his high school's basketball team, so he assumed the pain was sports related. His pain became so severe that he was taken to Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson. A biopsy revealed that Lynell had osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer most often found in the legs and arms. He began chemotherapy right away and then underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Lynell faced many complications after his first surgery, including being unable to walk for almost eight months. He went through a year of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries.Â
Now 20, Lynell has been cancer free for five months. He's able to walk on his own and continues to do physical therapy three times a week to regain his strength.
Lynell loves to play basketball, and although he isn't able to run quite yet, he hopes he can get back to playing soon.
